Launched in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain name extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to acquire john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken 3rd-level domains remained working.
